How to play Flappy Bird online
You only need one action to fly, but the timing of that action changes everything. Use this guide while practicing the game above. The aim is not to tap as quickly as possible: it is to give the bird enough lift to reach each opening without climbing into the top pipe.
Start a run and learn the controls
Activate the start control inside the game, then click or tap the playing area, press Space, or use Arrow Up to flap. Each flap pushes the bird upward. Between inputs it falls, so you need to alternate small bursts of lift with short pauses. If the keyboard does not respond, click inside the game first to give it focus.
Your first goal is simply to pass one opening. Watch how far a single flap moves the bird before adding another. After a crash, use the restart control inside the game and try again. Repeating a few short runs helps you learn the response better than making many rapid inputs during one attempt.
Read the gap and find a rhythm
Look slightly ahead of the bird toward the center of the next pipe gap. That gives you time to adjust before arriving. If the next opening is higher, begin climbing early with controlled flaps. If it is lower, let the bird fall briefly, then add lift before it drops below the opening.
Aim for the middle rather than trying to skim a pipe edge. More space above and below gives you room to recover from an imperfect tap. A regular rhythm works well across similar gaps, but you should still respond to changes in height. Keep your corrections small; repeated panic taps can turn a low position into an overshoot.
When a run ends, notice where the bird hit. A top-pipe collision often means you added too much lift or waited too little between flaps. A bottom-pipe collision can mean the climb started too late. Use that observation to change one thing on the next run rather than changing your entire timing at once.
Desktop and mobile: choose a comfortable setup
On desktop, try either a mouse click or the keyboard and stick with the input that feels most predictable. Space and Arrow Up make it easy to repeat the same motion without moving a pointer. Click the game before using keys so your input reaches the playing area instead of another page control.
On a phone or tablet, tap inside the game with one finger. Choose a spot that leaves the bird and approaching pipes visible. You do not need to tap directly on the character. A consistent hand position helps avoid covering the next gap, and a landscape view can make the course easier to read on a small display.
The controls share the same purpose on both devices, but the available screen space and the feel of the input differ. If you switch from touch to keyboard, take a few practice runs before comparing scores. A comfortable view and a reliable tapping rhythm matter more than finding a supposedly perfect device.
Use fullscreen for a clearer view
Select the Fullscreen button at the lower-right of the game to expand the playing area. The game stays on this page, while surrounding content moves out of view. On a desktop browser, you can leave fullscreen with Escape or the exit control. Give the game focus again if your next keyboard input does not reach it.
On supported phones, fullscreen also attempts to use landscape orientation. Browser and device support vary, so automatic rotation may not happen everywhere. Rotate your phone manually if needed; the normal embedded view remains available when fullscreen is unsupported. Try both views and use the one where you can see the approaching pipes most comfortably.
Set a score goal you can build on
A single pipe is a useful first milestone. Once you can clear it reliably, aim for five, then ten. Treat the ranges below as practice goals for this browser version, not official skill ratings or world-record standards. Different versions can use different gravity, gaps and collision rules.
| Score | What to practice next |
|---|---|
| 0–5 | Learn the lift from one flap and aim at the center of a gap. |
| 6–10 | Use a repeatable rhythm and reduce large corrections. |
| 11–25 | Adjust early when consecutive openings change height. |
| 26–50 | Keep the same calm timing as the run gets longer. |
| 51–100 | Maintain concentration without watching the counter constantly. |
| 100+ | Work toward consistent long runs rather than one lucky result. |
Compare your attempts under the same rules and focus on repeatability. Getting ten several times can be a more useful sign of progress than one unusually high run. Our Flappy Bird record guide explains reported high scores and the evidence needed to compare them.
No download, signup or separate installation
The game runs in your browser on this page. There is no app to install and no account required to start playing. An internet connection is needed to load the page and its game files. A school, workplace or managed network may restrict gaming websites, so access depends on the rules of the network you use.
If the game has not appeared, allow the page to finish loading and refresh once. If other tabs or applications are making your device slow, closing them may help. Browser extensions or network filters can also affect loading. Use a current browser and check that the playing area is visible before starting a run.
Keep practice short and purposeful
Pick one goal for a session: pass five pipes, avoid over-flapping, or recover more smoothly after a low gap. A specific goal makes each retry useful. When you notice yourself tapping harder or faster out of frustration, take a break and return with a fresh rhythm.
